Etymology[edit]
Ultimatively from Yiddish חכמה (khokhme, “wisdom, wit, wittiness”), from Hebrew חוכמה (khokhmá, “wisdom”). It is not clear whether the adjective is the past participle of the verb überhochmetzen or the verb hochmetzen with added prefix über-. Compare colloquial Hungarian hochmec.
