Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *þuljaną, from Proto-Indo-European *telh₂-. Cognate with Old Saxon tholian, Old High German dolēn, Old Norse þola (Swedish tåla), Gothic 𐌸𐌿𐌻𐌰𐌽 (þulan); compare Latin tulī (I carried), tolerō (to tolerate), tollō (to lift up, bear), Ancient Greek ἔτλην (étlēn, to suffer, endure).
