Cognate with Old Saxon tholian, Old High German dolēn, Old Norse þola (Swedish tåla), Gothic 𐌸𐌿𐌻𐌰𐌽 (þulan); compare Latin tulī (“I carried”), tolerō (“to tolerate”), tollō (“to lift up, bear”), Ancient Greek ἔτλην (étlēn, “to suffer, endure”).
