From Proto-Vietic *təm, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁iim ~ *t₁iəm ~ *t₁əm ~ *t₁a(i)m ~ *t₁(u)m; cognate with Pacoh tứm (to hit), Khmer ដំ (dɑm, to beat) and Khasi tem (to beat (drums)). See also đấm.
