Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *doːl, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *dul. Cognate with Muong Bi tồl, Khmer ទួល (tuəl), Old Mon dal (hill) (> Mon ဒဵု (tɜ̀)), Western Katu dɔːl ("back of mountain"), Minriq tol ("mountain"). There is another similar word with coda *-r, represented by Proto-Bahnaric *dɔːr (whence Koho dor) and Proto-Palaungic *ɗɤr (whence Western Lawa thu).
