Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *žiti, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷíh₃weti (to live). Cognate with Slovak žiť, Polish żyć, Old Church Slavonic жити (žiti), Lithuanian gyventi, Sanskrit जीवति (jīvati), Latin vīvō.
