From Ancient Greek ἀφιερόω (aphieróō), from ἀφ- (aph-) +‎ ἱερόω (hieróō), the latter component from ἱερός (hierós, sacred) +‎ (); the modern "devote" sense is a semantic loan from French consacrer.
