From Proto-Indo-European *méǵʰ(s)ri (locative), from *me (with) – cf. μετά (metá) – and *ǵʰes- (hand), whence χείρ (kheír). Cognate with its zero-grade ἄχρι (ákhri), Old Armenian մերձ (merj) and Albanian ndjerë.
