Etymology[edit]

PIE root
*pekʷ-

From Proto-Hellenic *péťťō, from Proto-Indo-European *pékʷ-ye-, from *pekʷ-. The alternative present stem πέπτω ‎(péptō) apparently comes from analogy with the root-stem πεπ- ‎(pep-) < *pekʷ-. Cognates include Latin coquō (English cook), Sanskrit पचति ‎(pacati), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬗𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 ‎(pačaiti), and Albanian pjek.
