Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Hellenic *péťťō, from Proto-Indo-European *pékʷ-ye-, from *pekʷ-. The alternative present stem πέπτω (péptō) apparently comes from analogy with the root-stem πεπ- (pep-) < *pekʷ-. Cognates include Latin coquō (English cook), Sanskrit पचति (pacati), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬗𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (pačaiti), and Albanian pjek.
