Bulgarian

Etymology 1

From Proto-Slavic *guja (snake), possibly continuing Proto-Indo-European *gew- (to twist, to flex) (cf. Ancient Greek γύης (gúēs, earth), γῠ́ᾰλον (gúalon, hollow structure)). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian гу́ја.

Borrowing from a Paleo-Balkan language is not excludable, either.

Probably a back-formation from the noun. In principle, reflects Proto-Slavic *guti, however, no cognates in other Slavic languages are attested.
