[edit]Borrowed from Latin industria from industrius (“active, assiduous, diligent, industrious”) from Old Latin indu, archaic variant of in + struō (“to arrange, build, compose, construct”) from Proto-Italic *strowō (“to pile up, construct”) from Proto-Indo-European *strew- (“to spread, strew”). Compare English industry, French industrie, German Industrie, Italian industria, Portuguese indústria, Spanish industria.
