From Proto-Permic *ku̇lni, from Proto-Uralic *kule-. By surface analysis, кыл (kyl, language, tongue) +‎ -ыны (-yny, infinitive suffix). Cognates include Northern Mansi хӯлуӈкве (hūluňkve) and Finnish kuulla.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian кывны (kyvny) and Komi-Yazva көлнө (kålnå).
