Etymology[edit]

From a Common Slavonic form which was also the etymon of Old Church Slavonic людъ (ljudŭ). It is related to Old Russian людиѥ (ljudije) and Old Church Slavonic людиє (ljudie) at some ancient time. It is cognate with Lithuanian liaudis (people), Latvian ļaudis (people), German Leute (people), Ancient Greek ἐλεύθερος (eleútheros), Latin līber, līberī.
