From Old Russian людиѥ (ljudije) and Old Church Slavonic людиє (ljudie), from Proto-Slavic *ljudъ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lewdʰ- (men, people). Cognate with Lithuanian liaudis (people), Latvian ļaudis (people), German Leute (people), Ancient Greek ἐλεύθερος (eleútheros), Latin līber, līberī.
