From Old Russian людиѥ ‎(ljudije) and Old Church Slavonic людиє ‎(ljudie), from Proto-Slavic *ljudъ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lewdʰ- ‎(men, people). Cognate with Lithuanian liaudis ‎(people), Latvian ļaudis ‎(people), German Leute ‎(people), Ancient Greek ἐλεύθερος ‎(eleútheros), Latin līber, līberī.
