Borrowed from German Meister, from Middle High German meister, from Old High German meistar, from Vulgar Latin *maester, from Latin magister. Doublet of магі́стр (mahístr, possessor of master's degree) and мі́стер (míster, mister (term of address in English-speaking countries)).
