Etymology

Inherited from Old Church Slavonic пѣти (pěti), from Proto-Slavic *pěti. The original conjugation was root-thematic as in Old Church Slavonic поѭ (pojǫ) (1p. sg. pres.), which was later substituted with -eja (and dialectally -еvаm) conjugations.
