[edit]Inherited from a colloquial form of Old East Slavic оружие (oružije), from Proto-Slavic *orǫžьje, from *orǫga / *orǫžь. Doublet of ору́жие (orúžije).

Usage notes
[edit]- Although the term embraces almost any long-barreled firearm (except those capable of automatic fire), nowadays it is mostly used to refer to a smoothbore hunting shotgun (synonym: охо́тничье ружьё (oxótničʹje ružʹjó)).
