Borrowed from Polish rynek, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hringaz (ring). Further from Proto-Indo-European *(s)krengʰ- (ring, circle) (akin to Proto-Indo-European *krongʰ-o-, whence Proto-Slavic *krǫgъ, whence Russian круг (krug)), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker-. Doublet of ранг (rang) and ринг (ring).
