From Old East Slavic сахаръ (saxarŭ), borrowed from Ancient Greek σάκχαρ (sákkhar), σάκχαρι (sákkhari), σάκχαρον (sákkharon), via Pali सक्खरा (sakkharā), from Sanskrit शर्करा (śarkarā).
