[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *solvъ. Cognate with Russian Old Church Slavonic славоочиѥ (slavoočije, “blue-gray (of eyes)”), and more distantly with Proto-Germanic *salwaz (“gray, muddy”) (whence English sallow). Ultimately related to Russian солове́й (solovéj, “nightingale”).
