Etymology[edit]

From Old Church Slavonic стадии (stadii, stade), borrowed from Byzantine Greek στάδιος (stádios, measure of length), a substantivation of Ancient Greek στάδιος (stádios, firm, fixed). Cognate with Latin stadium whence the recent doublet стадио́н (stadión) and stadium.
