[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *stьklo, from Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌹𐌺𐌻𐍃 (stikls), whence also скля́нка (skljánka, “phial; bottle”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teyg-, whence English stick. Cognates include Czech sklo.
