From Proto-Slavic *stьklo, from Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌹𐌺𐌻𐍃 (stikls), whence also скля́нка (skljánka, phial; bottle), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *steyg-, whence English stick. Cognates include Czech sklo.
