Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *tъlmačь, from Proto-Turkic *tilmaç (compare Turkish dilmaç ‎(interpreter)), from Proto-Turkic *til ‎(tongue) (Turkish dil) + Proto-Turkic *-maç ‎(noun suffix). Cognate with Slovene tolmač, Serbo-Croatian ту̀ма̄ч/tùmāč, Slovak tlmočník ‎(translator). Non-Slavic cognates include German Dolmetscher and Hungarian tolmács.
