Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *tъlmačь, from Proto-Turkic *tilmaç (compare Turkish dilmaç (interpreter)), from Proto-Turkic *til (tongue) (Turkish dil) + Proto-Turkic *-maç (noun suffix). Cognate with Slovene tolmač, Serbo-Croatian ту̀ма̄ч/tùmāč, Polish tłumacz (translator). Non-Slavic cognates include German Dolmetscher and Hungarian tolmács.
