Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *čixati, of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate with Bulgarian чи́хамь (číhamʹ) (Gerov), Slovene číhati (tonal orthography) (1sg. čȋham (tonal orthography)), Upper Sorbian čichać, Lower Sorbian tśichaś. Also found as чхать (čxatʹ), inherited from Proto-Slavic *čьxati, cognate with Ukrainian чха́ти (čxáty), Belarusian чхаць (čxacʹ), Polish czchać.
