From Old East Slavic ꙗзꙑчьникъ (jazyčĭnikŭ), from ꙗзꙑкъ (jazykŭ, tongue; nation). Modeled on Ancient Greek ἔθνος (éthnos, nation) : ἐθνικός (ethnikós, heathen).
