Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ku-bʰ-ro- with Sanskrit शुभ्र (śubhrá, shining, beautiful) and possibly Khotanese [script needed] (suraa-, clean, pure) as the only cognates. Less likely Iranian origin has also been suggested.
