From earlier ետղ(etł), from Proto-Indo-European *sedlo-, from *sed-(to sit). Cognates include Ancient Greek (Laconia) ἑλλά(hellá, seat), Latin sella(seat, chair, saddle), Old Church Slavonic седьло(sedĭlo) (Russian седло(sedlo)), Old High German sezzal(seat) (German Sessel) and Old English setl (English settle).
