Etymology
[edit]From Hebrew יִשְׁמָעֵאל (yishma'él, yišmāʿēl), from יִשְׁמַע אֵל (yishmá' 'él, yišmaʿ ʾēl, “God heard”). Corresponding to يَسْمَعُ (yasmaʕu, “he hears”) + إلّ (ʔill, “God”).
