From Classical Syriac ܝܲܥܩܘܿܒ݂ (yaʿqōḇ), from Biblical Hebrew יַעֲקֹב (yaʿaqōv). Corresponding to Arabic يَعْقُبُ (yaʕqubu, “he follows”).
