Relative adjective (nisba) composed of بَرْبَر (barbar, Berbers) +‎ ـِيّ (-iyy), probably from Ancient Greek βάρβαρος (bárbaros, non-Greek, foreign, barbarian), apparently imitative of foreign speech.
