From Middle Persian tlsyt' (tarsēdan, fear), from Proto-Iranian *tr̥ŝáti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tr̥sćáti, from Proto-Indo-European *tres-. Cognates include Latin terreō, Old Irish tarrach, and Ancient Greek τρέω (tréō).
