Persian[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

From Middle Persian lʾc (rāz, secret, mystery), from Old Persian *𐎼𐎠𐏀 (*rāza-), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *raȷ́ʰ- (secret, mystery; to abandon). Related to رستن (rastan, set free, leave, escape), and رها (rahâ, free, liberated).

Cognates with Parthian 𐫡𐫀𐫉 (rʾz /rāz/), and Sanskrit रहस्य (rahasya, secret, mystery, clandestine).

Also compare Old Armenian երազ (eraz), Imperial Aramaic 𐡀𐡓𐡆𐡀 (ʾrzʾ, mystery), Hebrew רָז (rāz), Classical Syriac ܐܪܙܐ (ʾərāzā), Iranian borrowings.
