Etymology 1

From the root ش ط ط (š-ṭ-ṭ).

شَطَّ (šaṭṭa) I, non-past يَشِطُّ or يَشُطُّ‎ (yašiṭṭu or yašuṭṭu)

  1. to go to extremes, to go too far, to exceed proper bounds, to be excessive
  2. to deviate, to digress, to stray
