Etymology

From the root ع ل م (ʕ-l-m), related to the verb عَلِمَ (ʕalima, to know).

Adjective

عَلِيم (ʕalīm) (feminine عَلِيمَة (ʕalīma), masculine plural عَلِيمُونَ (ʕalīmūna) or عُلَمَاء (ʕulamāʔ), feminine plural عَلِيمَات (ʕalīmāt), elative أَعْلَم (ʔaʕlam))

  3. omniscient, all-knowing (when used of God)
