Etymology

Derived from the passive participle of عَطَّلَ (ʕaṭṭala, to neglect, to leave idle, to damage), from the root ع ط ل (ʕ-ṭ-l).

Adjective

مُعَطَّل (muʕaṭṭal) (feminine مُعَطَّلَة (muʕaṭṭala), masculine plural مُعَطَّلُونَ (muʕaṭṭalūna), feminine plural مُعَطَّلَات (muʕaṭṭalāt))

  1. out of order, broken (machine, etc.)
  2. unemployed, idle
  3. closed (store, office, etc.)
  4. stopped (engine)
