From Arabic مَلِك (malik, king). From Proto-Semitic *malk-. Cognate to Hebrew מֶלֶךְ (mélekh, king) and מָלַךְ (malákh, to rule), and Aramaic מַלְכָּא (malkā, king) and מְלַךְ (m'laḵ, to rule).
