Inherited from Sanskrit गान (gāna), from the root गै (gai, to sing), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gaH- (sing), from Proto-Indo-European *geH- (sing). Cognate with Hindi गाना (gānā), Assamese গান (gan), Bengali গান (gan), Gujarati ગાણું (gāṇũ), Marathi गाणे (gāṇe), Urdu گانا (gānā).
