Etymology 1[edit]

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘐𑘰𑘜𑘹𑘽 (gāṇeṃ), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀸𑀡 (gāṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit गान (gāna). Compare Gujarati ગાણું (gāṇũ), Hindi गाना (gānā), Punjabi ਗਾਣਾ (gāṇā) / گاݨا (gāṇā), Assamese গান (gan), Bengali গান (gan).

Cognate with Konkani गाव्चे (gāvce), Gujarati ગાવું (gāvũ), Hindi गाना (gānā), Punjabi ਗਾਣਾ (gāṇā) / گاݨا (gāṇā).
