Inherited from Aramaic אָב (ʾāḇ), from Akkadian 𒌚𒉈 (Abum); also borrowed into Arabic آب (ʔāb) and Hebrew אָב ('áv)

1. August (eight month of the Gregorian calendar of thirty-one days, following July and preceding September)
2. fifth month of the Assyrian calendar
3. Av (eleventh month of the Jewish calendar of thirty days, following Tammuz and preceding Elul)

Usage notes

• ܐܵܒ (āb) is the most common name for the month of August alongside ܛܲܒܵܚ (ṭabbāḥ), the two fairly being interchangeable. However there is a push for ܛܲܒܵܚ (ṭabbāḥ) to be used more often, due to August 7 being ܝܵܘܡܵܐ ܕܣܵܗܕܹ̈ܐ ܐܵܫܘܿܪ̈ܵܝܹܐ (yāwmā d-sāhdē āšorāyē, “Assyrian Martyrs Day”)
