Etymology[edit]

Compare Arabic ظُفْر ‎(ẓufr) and Hebrew צִפֹּרֶן ‎(ṣippōren). The senses of "onycha" and "onyx" are calques of Ancient Greek ὄνυξ ‎(ónux).
