From Aramaic כַּפָּא (kappā), from Proto-Semitic *kapp-; compare Arabic كَفّ (kaff), Hebrew כַּף (kaf) and Akkadian 𒀉 (kappum). The sense of “applause” is either a semantic loan from Persian کف (kaf) or a phono-semantic matching of Northern Kurdish چەپڵە (çeplle).
