Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *deḱ- (“to take, offer”). Cognate with Ancient Greek δόξᾰ (dóxa, “opinion, judgement”) whence English orthodox etc., Ancient Greek δόγμᾰ (dógma), Latin decet (“fitting”) whence English decent, Latin decus whence decorum, Latin discō (“learn”), Latin doceō (“teach”) whence English doctrine etc., Latin dignus.
