From Proto-Indo-Aryan *nāśáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nāćáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *noḱ-éye-ti, from *neḱ- (“to perish, disappear”). Cognate with Latin noceō (“to harm, hurt”).
