Etymology

    Inherited from Prakrit पत्थर m (patthara, stone) without cluster simplification, from Sanskrit प्रस्तर (prastara). Displaced Old Hindi पाथर (pāthara). Cognate with Punjabi ਪੱਥਰ (patthar). False cognate of Ancient Greek πέτρα (pétra).
