From Proto-Indo-Aryan *báwdʰati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáwdʰati, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéwdʰeti (“to wake, rise up”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬊𐬜𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (baoδaiti), Ancient Greek πεύθομαι (peúthomai), πυνθάνομαι (punthánomai), Old Church Slavonic блюсти (bljusti), Old English bēodan (whence English bid).
