Sanskrit

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *máźȷ́ati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mázǰati, from Proto-Indo-European *mesg- (to dip, sink). Cognate with Latin mergō (I dip), Lithuanian mazgóti, Latvian mazgât, Russian Москва́ (Moskvá) (whence English Moscow). Compare also English sub-merge, immerse, Latin borrowings.
