Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mátiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátiš, from Proto-Indo-European *mn̥ti-, oblique stem of *méntis (thought). Cognate with Latin mēns, Ancient Greek αὐτόματος (autómatos), Old English ġemynd (whence English mind).
