In the sense of "smallpox", compare other-language epithets for the goddess Shitala and words for "mother" or "goddess" like Sanskrit शीतला (śītalā, “Shitala, smallpox”), Assamese আই (ai, “mother, smallpox”), Marathi देवी (devī, “goddess, smallpox”), and Tamil அம்மை (ammai, “mother, smallpox”).
Noun
[edit]माता • (mātā) f (masculine पिता, Urdu spelling ماتا)
- mother
- (Hinduism) ellipsis of शीतला माता (śītlā mātā, “(Mother) Shitala”) A goddess associated with smallpox and more broadly the curing of poxes and diseases.
