Inherited from Prakrit बिट्ट (biṭṭa), with further etymology unknown. Compare Sanskrit बटु (baṭu, “boy, lad, chap”). Cognate with Punjabi ਬੇਟਾ (beṭā), Bengali বেটা (beṭa), Gujarati બેટો (beṭo), Marathi बेटा (beṭā).
