[edit]Inherited from Prakrit *𑀧𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀅 (*pŏttaa), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀢𑀓 (potaka /pottaka/), from Sanskrit पौत्र (páutra) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). Doublet of पौत्र (pautra).
